  8.  AB    The HIV Legal Project (HELP) was established by a small group of AIDS
  9.        activists in 1990 to provide legal assistance to PLWA. The majority of
  10.        the board of directors of the Project is HIV+ to ensure community
  11.        accountability and relevance. With funding from the provincial Ontario
  12.        Legal Aid Plan, the Project has hired a lawyer to work full time within
  13.        another legal aid clinic, The Advocacy Resource Centre for the
  14.        Handicapped. The Project does test case litigation, education and
  15.        advocacy for individuals and for law reform; however, the Project acts
  16.        mainly as a referral service for people facing HIV/AIDS discrimination,
  17.        in income maintenance, insurance, employment, housing, immigration and
  18.        health care. In our first year the Project handled over 300 requests for
  19.        help in the following areas: private insurance, 28%; health care 23%;
  20.        human rights 23%; family law, criminal law and immigration 17%; and
  21.        wills and powers of attorney 9%. We will report on the most recent
  22.        activities of the Project: the number and types of calls, the issues
  23.        raised, and the Project's response.
